Google Brings Gemini to Mac With Dedicated Desktop App
Google is beta testing a standalone Gemini AI app for Mac, taking the fight directly to ChatGPT and Claude.
Google is making its move on the Mac desktop. The company has kicked off consumer beta testing for a dedicated Gemini AI app built specifically for Apple's Mac lineup.
The play is obvious: go head-to-head with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, both of which already have native Mac apps carving out real estate on users' desktops.
Until now, Mac users wanting Gemini had to rely on the browser. A standalone app changes the dynamic — it means faster access, deeper system integration, and a persistent presence on the dock.
Google is clearly tired of ceding ground in the desktop AI race. OpenAI and Anthropic moved first with dedicated Mac clients, and Google is now scrambling to close the gap. The beta signals this isn't a distant roadmap item — it's actively shipping to real users.
